We all know intuitively that Music has the power to move us, but how and why we oft times wonder.
Throughout the world today many Scientists and Medical Professionals are engaged in exploring just how and why we are affected by Music and Art and how it can be a factor in our health and well-being.
As a result of many requests and the driving force of a Psychiatrist/Musician, Dr Bruce Victor from the University of California we have a highly interesting, educational and entertaining afternoon to bring you a series of Talks and Performances from some very prominent players from “The Flying Faculty”.
“Scales to Scalpels”- Dr Lisa Wong
Dr Lisa Wong professor at Harvard University Medical School and president and current violinist in the Longwood Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble of Boston’s medical community.
Lisa is the author of “Scales to Scalpels”: Doctors who practice the healing arts of Music and Medicine and contributor to Music as Care: Artistry in the Hospital Environment. Dr Wong plays the guitar, ukulele, piano, violin, viola, and cello.
“The Creative Brain, Music and dementia” – Mike Hanrahan
Mike, Songwriter and Guitarist with Stockton’s Wing, producer and film maker is a Senior Fellow at The Global Brain Health Institute, Trinity College Dublin. He has been a family carer for ten years and it is this lived experience that inspires him to support all who care and all who search for better ways to treat those who live with dementia and related brain health issues.
“Music, Empathy, and Hobnailed Boots” – Dr Bruce Victor MD
Bruce is a Musician and Physician, specialising in psychiatry, ultimately becoming a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine of the University of California, San Francisco. “Empiric scholarly research has demonstrated that early training in synchronized music making enhances the development of empathy, prosocial behaviour, and cognitive skills.
Dr Victor, a regular columnist with Irish Music Magazine is a great believer in the link between Music and Well-Being and is a member and great supporter of Rostrevor based Artsawonder non-profit collective, the organisers of this event.

Pioneering her own brand of cosmic folk, Bróna McVittie both deftly reimagines traditional folk and crafts her own nature-inspired songs. A member of Artsawonder
